World Cup legends back Leeds' bid

England 2018 applicant host city Leeds has received the backing of former players and bid ambassadors Norman Hunter and Jack Charlton.
The special occasion took place at a packed Elland Road during a ceremony in which Charlton re-represented Hunter with his World Cup winner’s medal. He received his medal for the first time at Wembley in June, following the decision to award medals to everyone included in winning squads.
The pair were teammates at Leeds United and in the celebrated 1966 England squad, and have both devoted recent time and effort to supporting the England 2018 bid.
Hunter, who attended the England 2018 bid launch in May, said: "It was an honour to receive the medal at Wembley, but to receive it on my own ground in front of the Leeds means so much. It was a lovely occasion and it was great to be able to share that moment with my family and all those Leeds fans who were there."
Charlton, who also managed the Republic of Ireland in the 1990 and 1994 World Cup finals, spoke of his delight at returning to Elland Road and was quick to lend his support to the Leeds campaign.
Jack said: "It’s very important to bring the World Cup here. It would bring a lot of attraction. People will come from all over the world, not just the Yorkshire area, and they will get to know what Leeds is like and see the city."
Leeds is one of 16 cities across the country that has declared an interest in becoming an England 2018 host city.
The others are: NewcastleGateshead, Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Hull, Leeds, Plymouth, Portsmouth, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Leicester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield and Sunderland.
