Bristol bids to be World Cup host city

People from across the South West region are getting behind Bristol’s bid to be a host city for the World Cup in 2018. We are a region immersed in sport at every level and are passionate about the opportunity to bring the World Cup to Bristol.

Bristol is an enthralling, international destination boasting major cultural venues, a wealth of historic buildings, a £500 million new shopping and entertainment quarter and fantastic green open spaces right in the heart of the city. Bristol’s working harbour runs right through the city and is the backdrop for some of the city’s major events.

Bristol is home to world-class brands such as Airbus, Hewlett Packard, the BBC Natural History Unit and Aardman Animations. The two well - respected universities contribute to the city’s reputation as a centre of knowledge and innovation.

A new football stadium in the south of the city will form the centrepiece of Bristol’s bid. Beautiful open spaces offer fantastic settings for visiting fans to take part in Bristol’s special welcome. The city is well connected too, served by two motorways, an international airport with plans for expansion linking over 400 routes and excellent rail links across the UK and Europe.

Bristol is an active city where people participate in sport. The Downs League is one of the oldest leagues in the country and every week, during the football season, thousands of people take part in games across the city. More people cycle in Bristol than in any other UK city and over 15,000 people take part each year in the Bristol Half Marathon.

Bristol has a wealth of sporting talent and a track record of holding big events. From hosting international rugby and cricket world cup matches and the successful UK School Games in 2008, to the International Balloon Festival, Kite Festival and annual Bristol Harbour Festival - the city is able to provide the experience and qualities needed to be a host city for 2018!
